Dudhwa
Dudhwa Tiger Reserve is a protected area in Uttar Pradesh that stretches mainly across the Lakhimpur Kheri and Bahraich districts and comprises the Dudhwa National Park, Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary and Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary. It covers an area of 1,284.3 sq km and includes three large forest fragments amidst the matrix dominated by agriculture. It shares the north-eastern boundary with Nepal, which is defined to a large extent by the Mohana River.
Though the 3 protected areas are physically not connected to each other, each consists of unbroken tracts of dense forests. These Terai ecosystems are highly productive habitats of diverse flora and fauna and home to a considerable number of obligate species and species of restricted distribution.
The vegetation is of the North Indian Moist Deciduous type, containing some of the finest examples of Sal forests in India, as well the most extensive tracts of moist grasslands that remain in this region. The fauna includes, apart from sizable populations of Tiger and Leopard, a viable population of a nominate sub-species of the Swamp deer or Barasingha , a population of Indian One-horned Rhinoceros successfully reintroduced in 1984, and certain critically endangered species like the Bengal Florican and the Hispid Hare, adding to the marvel of Dudhwa. There is an enviable bird life with over 450 resident as well as migratory species. Dotted with a number of shallow lakes or taals, there are diverse, perennial sources of freshwater in the reserve.
Sharda River flows by Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary, Geruwa River flows through the Katerniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary and while Suheli and Mohana streams flow in the Dudhwa National Park, all of which are tributaries of the mighty Ghagra River. Some of the important taals are the Bankey, Kakraha, Amaha, Bhadi and Bhadraula. The taals, streams and rivers support a rich variety of turtle species, the Mugger crocodile, the unique and endangered fish eating crocodile and Gharial as well as the Gangetic dolphin, which are found in the Geruwa.
The existence of the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve undoubtedly influences in a host of ways, critical but not fully understood, the ecological balance of not only the region but also of our planet. With its varied topography, lush green landscape, extensive wetlands and remarkable biodiversity, the Reserve is an enviable paradise for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Panna Tiger Reserve, or the Panna Nationa Park, as it is popularly known, is located in Panna and Chattarpur district of Madhya Pradesh. Standing over an area of 542 sq. kms, Panna is India’s 22nd Tiger Reserve and fifth in Madhya Pradesh. It lies right beside the Ken River flowing through central India. It is merely 57 KMs away from Khajuraho, the world heritage center renowned for its sculptures. Panna National Park was officially established in the year 1981. The Government placed it under the umbrella campaign of Project Tiger in 1994. That’s when it became the 22nd Tiger Reserve of the country. Gangau Wildlife Sanctuary which saw its official creation in 1975 was also added to the reserve area.
The forests of Panna used to be hunting retreats of the erstwhile rulers of the Panna, Chhatarpur and Bijawar princely states. Today, the same forests are instrumental in protection and preservation of nature and wildlife.
The overall climate of the place varies greatly season to season. It receives scorching heat in summers, cool pleasant winds in spring and heavy rainfall in the monsoon season. The downpour ensures that Panna remains covered in thick lush green vegetation throughout the year. The Ken River flowing right through the middle of the reserve not only adds to the cool serene vibe but also creates some stunning waterfalls on its journey to falling in the valley. Numerous sights of historical significance exist within the reserve area. Here, you can catch a glimpse of human civilization as old as from the Neolithic age. Tall standing deciduous trees are permanent denizens of the reserve.
The year 2008 brought on what was to be a dismal state and poor reputation for Panna. The reserve lost all its tigers to poaching. It was saddening news to wildlife enthusiasts and tiger lovers everywhere. Six year ago, there had been more than forty tigers sprawling around in the reserve. To restore Panna Tiger Reserve to its former glory, a tiger relocation programme was brought into execution. Under this effort two tigresses and a male tiger were translocated to Panna. The tigresses came from Bandhavgarh and Kanha National Parks while the male was resident of Pench Tiger Reserve. These efforts came to a sudden halt when the male tiger T1 began displaying homing instincts and sauntered back towards Pench. It steadily moved back to its home crossing multiple human dominated landscapes though no conflict was ever reported. T1 was brought back to Panna after a month of tracking and following. On its second visit, the tiger settled well, established territory and began mating. Four new cubs arrived in April 2010. The tiger population has been on a steady rise ever since.
The dry and hot climate of Panna has given rise to dry Teak and dry mixed forest that grows amply and suitably on the shallow Vindhyan soils. Miscellaneous dry deciduous forest interspersed with grassland areas dominates the vegetation cover. Open grasslands, open woodlands and riverines with tall grass blades are also present.
Panna is the most well managed, well-kept, naturally suitable and an ideal home to diverse wildlife varieties. There exist many different kinds of flora and fauna here including Sloth Bears, Cheetals, Chinkara, Nilgai and Vultures. It is the residence of the most majestic of big cats – the Royal Bengal Tigers and his fellow Leopards. You can also find Hyena, Caracal and some other smaller members of the cat family here.
Panna is home ground to around 200 varieties of feathered beings, including the migratory ones. You can meet species like Honey Buzzard, King Vulture, Blossom Headed Parakeet and Hawk-eagle. Panna’s list of flaunt-worthy inhabitants also includes many snake varieties including the great Indian python.

Melghat meaning ‘meeting of the ghats’ is a Tiger Reserve located in the south of the Satpura Hill Range in Central India. Malghat Tiger Reserve is under the first nine tiger reserves which were notified in 1974 under the Project Tiger. Melghat Wildlife Sanctuary, Gugamal national Park & Narnala Wildlife Sanctuary constitutes Melghat Tiger Reserve. Melghat lies in the area of the river system containing various flora and fauna. Five rivers flow here. i.e. Khandu, Khapra, Sipna, Gadga and Dolar, these rivers are the tributaries of river Tapti. The three important tributaries which originate from the Melghat region and then drain into river Purna are, Chandrabaga, Adnani, and Wan.
The whole forest is a tropical dry deciduous forest, where Teak dominates the forest. The area is surrounded by never-ending hills, ravines, jagged cliffs, and steep climbs and it spreads about an area of 2768 sq km. Melghat Tiger Reserve is the fourth largest reserve of India. Among the whole locality, the most commonly found associates are Lagerstroemia parviflora, Lannea Coromandelica, Amla (Emblica officinalis), Terminalia tomentosa, Anogeissus latifolia, and Oujenia oojeinesis.

Sasan Gir
Located at a distance of 60 km from the town of Junagarh, India, Gir National Park is one of the few places in the world besides Africa, where you can experience the majestic presence of the Asiatic Lion. It was established as an initiative to preserve the almost extinct species of this rare carnivore and has been continuing to do so, efficiently. The exotic flora of this national park provides habitat to nearly 200 species of birds, including the endangered Long-billed Vulture. Kamleshwar reservoir, which is the largest one in the forest, is home to about 40 species of reptiles and amphibians, such as the King Cobra. These forests are also known to house the world’s only four-horned antelope- the Chowsingha. Get an insight into the lives of the Nawabs of the area, as you visit the Gir Museum in the premises of the national park. Trophy hunting almost erased the existence the Asiatic Lion from the globe, and with sheer efforts, the numbers have shown a remarkable increase. If you are a wildlife adventurist, then a visit to the Gir National Park is going to captivate you for a lifetime.
Most of the area is rugged hills, with high ridges and densely forested valleys, wide grassland plateaus, and isolated hilltops. There are also areas of the park with open scrub and savannah-type grassland. This variety of vegetation provides for a huge array of animals.
Along with the famous Lions, other animals and reptiles in the park include the chital (Indian spotted deer), sambar, chinkara, blackbuck, leopard, jungle cat, langur, striped hyena, wild boar, grey musk shrews, marsh crocodiles, Russell’s viper, Indian rock python and monitor lizard. Gir is also home to over 300 species of birds, many of which can be seen year-round – the Malabar whistling thrush, Paradise flycatcher, crested serpent eagle, king vulture, pelicans, painted storks to name a few.
There is a Gir Interpretation Zone, at Devalia, 12 km west of Sasan Gir, which has been established as an eco-tourism zone to reduce an overload of visitors to the Gir national Park and to provide an experience of the wildlife of Gir at a single place and in a safe habitat.
